2005: Engaging Staff

  • Winner: Sally Ann Watts, Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust
  • Highly commended: Communications Team, Homerton University Hospitals NHS Trust
  • Highly commended: Jessamy Kinghorn, Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust

Winning Project: 'Team 30 - connect'

Sally Ann Watts initiated an internal communications project that helped turn a 1.8 million overspend into a 46 million surplus. Ten, 30 minute workshops were held over three days, at different times, and all staff were invited to attend. The workshops generated more than 30 ideas from staff for saving money and stamping out waste and inefficiency around the Trust and many changes were implemented as a result.

The communications work covered designing posters and flyers, developing content for a dedicated intranet area, drafting features in the staff magazine and filming a 3 minute video.

Judge: Nigel Derrick, Computershare

Judge's Comment: The winner's exercise in staff engagement covered a broad range of staff who were actively engaged rather than just publishing information. There was a good link to the Trust's strategies and good communications had helped reduce overspend.
