2005: Improvements in Communication

  • Winner: Chris Capewell, University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust
  • Highly commended: Andrew Stronach, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital

'From Zero to Hero'

This was a campaign spear-headed by the three strong communications team to turn around the perceived reputation of a failing hospital. The Trust went from zero stars to three stars in two and a half years and work undertaken by staff throughout the Trust was strongly underpinned by communications. Examples include: ongoing media campaign to highlight the work of staff, inviting media visits, encouraging staff to highlight good news stories, back to the floor events etc.

Judge: Niall Dickson, The King's Fund

Judge's Comment: A comprehensive and well thought through campaign which involved staff at all levels working together to transform both internal and external communications. This involved a range of initiatives, from encouraging journalists to visit the Trust, to making the senior management team available to everyone working at the hospital. The Trust has been turned around from zero to three stars but the communication work, not least in involving staff in the process, has clearly played a vital role. It shows what can be done in a relatively short time even in organisations that are struggling.
